Isshuukan Friends / One Week Friends Episode 3 Notes

April 20th, 2014.

Taking Ownership of Your Life

Album of 18 images from this episode. I especially like the png versions of the following two shots for a possible wallpaper: Onetwo.

2) This episode cranked up the drama. Rather than just being “fuzzy atmosphere”, we’ve actually had drama, and growth. No, the growth I’m referring to has nothing to do with Fujimiya remembering something, that’s a plot-event. I’m talking about character changes and being forced to grow. There’s a reason Fujimiya had been shocked when told, “You have to speak up for yourself. (You have to be the one to reach out to others, to make a bond, and maintain it.)” Hase is happy to speak up for Fujimiya, but just like last week, her past-self can’t make friends for her. Hase can’t make friends for her. Only she is in control of her own life.

2) “Do you not like Fujimiya either?” – “Who a person hangs out with is their own choice.” Wise Shogo, summarizing the whole philosophy of “Friends of Friends” into one sentence. Well, let’s try to break it down anyway:

  1. Hase doesn’t need Shogo’s approval. If he wants to spend time with Fujimiya, he should.
  2. Hase shouldn’t try to get Shogo to like Fujimiya. So Hase wants to spend time with her, it doesn’t mean his friend should as well.
  3. Well, guess it’s pretty simple, even if often overlooked, as we want the people we enjoy spending time with, to be able to spend time with them all together. I think Hase is trying to get Fujimiya to have more friends, because that’s her wish.

3) Shogo is an amusing audience stand-in. He’s a cooler head male, complaining about the “Fuzzy atmosphere“, noting that Hase and Fujimiya appear to exist in a slightly different reality than the rest of us. But that’s why we like it. And yes, Hase is silly, asking Shogo to come, and then getting angry at him for that very same reason. Hase is an emotional and impulsive one, but Shogo knows it, and he also knows it’ll blow over. Which is sort of funny. Fujimiya is the one with the weekly memory erasure, but it’s Hase who is as flighty and as quick to change as the wind. I guess when you lose memories every week as Fujimiya does, you tend to try and cling to what you have left.

4) Fujimiya’s shocked face when Shogo mentioned the possibility of brain damage truly did surprise me. This means she had never mentioned her situation to her parents. I thought they knew. Hm.

5) Hase trying to convince us how good of a person/friend Shogo is amusing. I think his willingness to help when it matters, to silly Hase, is what truly makes him a good friend.

Full notes:

Time for the sweetest, and best shows of the season. I was waiting for this so much. It’s here! :D

Dead-eyes Fujimiya. Is this Monday? Is this a mask so others won’t approach her, or is this a shell to keep others at bay so she won’t get hurt?

Shogo’s right. “Classroom Fujimiya” seems like a cold one, alright.

Hase, totally convincing in his praise for Shogo. Probably.

Isshuukan Friends Episode 3 / One Week Friends episode 3 anime notes - Fujimiya Kaori, Hase Yuuki and Kiryuu Shougo - Fuzzy Atmosphere

Sometimes you wonder about Hase… perhaps he is the twisted one, looking for twisted people as friends :D

Heh, the fuzzy and fluffy art-style? Shogo actually comments on it, wondering what’s up with it :D

Poor Shogo, taken into this show from another show, like OreGairu, “This atmosphere is so relaxed… it’s sickeningly sweet.” And that, my dear Shogo, is why we love this show.

Shogo continues to be the audience stand-in, “Sounds complicated. Not only do your memories reset weekly, but only those who apply to your friends.” Yes, the setup is a bit contrived. We’re here for the fuzzy :3

Wait, that she looks shocked at the notion of physical brain damage, that means she hadn’t told her family? Now that is surprising.

Hearing yourself deconstructed can hurt. That’s why they asked him to come, for his cooler and more objective approach to things.

Silly Hase, asking Shogo to come, and then regretting it for the very reason he asked him to come.

Sad Fujimiya, can serve as a wallpaper. She gave up on the diary. I think she sort of wants to forget this week, to leave it behind. This thoughtful shot also works. Oh, she just really doesn’t want to deal with people.

Shogo, reminding Fujimiya of what had shocked her to her senses before. She has to tell people on her own. She has to reach out and make a bond. She can’t rely on others doing her work for her.

“That’s a Monday face.” Shogo knows the fear and hope warring in Hase’s young heart.

Slightly tearful laughing Fujimiya is the best.
